Laptop for ProE WF 5

Laptop for ProE WF 5

Laptop for ProE WF 5

(OP)
Hello everybody,

I'm looking for a laptop with Windows 7 for ProEngineer WF 4.0 (64bit). What laptop, graphic card, RAM, company (DELL, HP, Toshiba) do you ricommend? I would like working with big assembly, so card should be quite good. I also find in web site PTC that they recommended Nvidia Quadro FX, but it is very expensive. I have about $900. Could you help me? Pls anser for following questions:
- what graphic card
- what processor
- which laptop (dell?)

Thanks for advices.

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

You won't find a new computer capable of running Pro/E for that price.

You need a Win7-64 Profssional OS with 8GB of memory and a Quadro FX graphics card. A dual-core i5 or i7 CPU.
Dell's 4500 mobile workstation comes in at just over $1600 with those specs.

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

If it doesn't have to be Windows 7, I've had no problems with WF5 on an XP (SP3) machine - 3GHz Core2 Duo with 3Gb of RAM.  Granted I don't push very large assemblies but still...

hi Jabberwocky,
thanks for answer.

What graphic card do you have? This is the most important :)

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

I guess I should've mentioned this is on a desktop, and it was already set up for pushing other CAD like Inventor and SWx.

The card is indeed a Quadro FX 1700...

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

The reason the Quatro FX (or Fire GL if you're looking at ATI) canrds are recommended is because they are tested and certified with drivers optimised for CAD applications. The actual hardware of the top level 'pro' card is probably equivalent to an 'upper medium' range 'gamer' card. The components may be of a higher grade and it is certified but you wont be getting much better performance (so much so to the extent that you can sometimes work out which consumer card its based on and trick the system into thinking its got a workstation card in. Note however in Solidworks, not having a workstation card will lose you the 'realview' display option if you like looking at shiny models.

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

@Ninja182: Modern "Gamer" cards are designed to use the DirectX APIs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX).  The Quadro FX and Fire GL cards are both designed to use OpenGL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL), which is Pro|E's preferred method.

It is possible to get by on a high end card, but you will still suffer a significant performance loss.

Thanks for your advise. The laptop will be desired especially for 3D design like ProE.

RE: Laptop for ProE WF 5

I think your option #5 is the only one with a certified craphics card, but the Inspirion series as a whole are not certified machines by PTC.
