Truck Tire Properties

Truck Tire Properties

Truck Tire Properties

(OP)
Does anyone have a feel for what the yield strength or Modulus of elasticity would be for a truck tire?  With the way a tire is manufactured, the steel and fabric plys of a tire really make it hard to try and guess what a comparable material might be.

RE: Truck Tire Properties

Without test data I guess I would start with the properties of the fibers (steel?) and rubber and estimate the composite properties based on the ratios of each (see a book or article on how to do this)

RE: Truck Tire Properties

I don't think rubber can be considered linear for any significant amount of deformation. Rather, I think that a Mooney-Rivlin model is often used for modeling rubber.

RE: Truck Tire Properties

trexbus,

I would ask what you are trying to accomplish....are you trying to model the internal stresses in a tire, or are you looking for things like vertical stiffness, lateral stiffness, alingning moment, etc?

Google NHTSA, and specifics on what you are looking for.  A lot of people have developed methods to describe internal stresses and deflections and overall tire performance.  Some of the work is in the form of Master's or PHD thesis and is available.
