Modelling Adhesively bonded Joint in ABAQUS
Modelling Adhesively bonded Joint in ABAQUS
(OP)
Hello friends
I am relatively new to ABAQUS and need to model a Adhesively bonded single lap joint. Therefore i need to know what all data do i need excluding the dimensions, and how to glue or join the adhesive to the material (maybe steel or aluminium), how to assign the properties etc. I need to do that ASAP a quick response will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance !

I suppose you want to explicitly model the adhesive layer in single lap joint. I recommend that you start with a simple model. Use linear elastic properties for adhesive and adherends. To model the joint, you can make the complete joint as single part including adhesive and adherends and then mesh the part. For meshing, you can use biased mesh seeds, where mesh in the adhesive layer is fine and gradually becomes coarse in adherends. The other approach is to make adherends and adhesive as separate parts and then use tie constraint to join them. This way, adhesive and adherends can be meshed separately. Once you get the simple model running, you can start adding to it.
There are a number of research papers on modelling of adhesive joints, which may be of help.

I am working on something similar. I am currently modelling an adhesive layer (in the process of which orphan mesh is involved). The adhesive layer is used to connect two masonry blocks together. This layer is meant to act like a glue (using traction-separation damage), which once passed the maximum stress, etc, cracking initiates at the interface of the two blocks and separation propagates.
I was wondering if the adhesive layer has to be connected to the blocks (using either different type of constraints or interactions), or it acts like a glue itself and doesn't need connecting.
Thank you
