Metal extraction/separation?

Metal extraction/separation?

Metal extraction/separation?

(OP)
Hey all,

I have a good amount of used platinum plated chrome blades and I don't want them to do to waste. What's the typical method of separating and isolating metals like these? Any help would be great!

RE: Metal extraction/separation?

Wouldn't it be easier to contact your local recycler. If you still want to do it yourself some idea of quantities/sizes, proportions of platinum to chromium/steel would be good.

I'm not really sure, that's why I'm asking. I've thought about recycling, but if I could isolate each metal from each other then I might make more. Unfortunately, I don't know the ratio.

RE: Metal extraction/separation?

If the quantity is big enough you sell them to a Platinum Refiner like Engelhard, they will extract the Pt and pay you accordingly. I wouldn't expect any significant amounts of Pt on a blade. Don't use one of the local Gold and Silver buyers.

I have to temper this by saying we get about $700 to $1000 for a pair of gloves with more for shoes and coveralls after inspecting certain parts of a Nitric Acid Plant.

It's about 2.5lbs worth of fine razor blades, I don't know if it will be enough to squeak out an ounce or anywhere close. I'll look around for refiners, thanks for the tip.

RE: Metal extraction/separation?

If you know someone in the scrap business, ask them who buys the catalytic converters for recycling.

RE: Metal extraction/separation?

Scrap guys are never known to be upfront in giving information. I have been involved in metal recovery, but I have not done Pt or gold. Will they be chemically leached for winning Pt,just curious.

These will need to go to a platinum refiner- this is chemistry you won't want to attempt on your own.

Scrap dealers are in the business of ripping you off.  You don't have enough to interest the refiners directly, so unfortunately you will be ripped off, at least a little.  Just like everything else you do with money, get multiple prices and not just from your immediate neighborhood.
