The latest issue of Better Roads indicates the Fderal Highway Administration is creating a website that will allow access to safety, economic, demographic and travel data. They may be a good place to start looking. The web site is listed as

www.bts.gov

I,m not sure if it's up and running, but it's worth a shot.
