Arc-Flash Plenum

Arc-Flash Plenum

Arc-Flash Plenum

(OP)
Hi there,

Out client has a arc-resistant 4.16kV Medium Voltage Motor Controller in a seperate electrical room which is located in a larger compressor room. This controller has a plenum at the top to direct any arc-flash to a safe or controlled environment.

My question is with regards to the exit of the plenum to a safe or controlled environment (i.e. where should the arc-flash be directed to). I'm thinking there are some ways for the exit of the plenum.

1)  Have the exit plenum extended to the exterior of the building so that any arc-flashes is directed away from the building[ I have some concerns with that as temperature can go below -40 degrees celcius during winter]

2) Have the exit plenum in the electrical room itself.[The space between the plenum and the ceiling of the electrical room is about 8-10ft. My concern with this method is that essentially, the arc-flash is not directed to a safe and controlled environment]

The electrical room, as mentioned earlier, is located in the compressor room. Having a arc-flash directed to the compressor room may also not be feasible.

Are there any other alternatives that anyone could shed light on?

Comments anyone?

Thanks,

Sonic
