Fill Settlement

Fill Settlement

Fill Settlement

(OP)
Does anyone have a good reference for estimating long-term total settlement of compacted artificial fill under its own weight (strain - or percent compression) based on soil index properties (or fill classification)?

RE: Fill Settlement

are you looking for fill induced settlement or the settlement within the actual fill layer? navfac (now UFC) is good

RE: Fill Settlement

(OP)
Thank you msucog.  I have Navfac.  The compression values on the "Typical Properties of Compacted Soils" is not so useful for the evaluation I need to make because the confining stresses corresponding to the values listed are quite high.  I believe the intent of those values is for evaluating settlement of shallow foundations on fill.  Do you have any other ideas?

RE: Fill Settlement

You might look for the following references that may be of some help in evaluating expected settlement of fill:

"Precompression for Improvement of Foundation Soils"
by Stanley J. Johnson, in ASCE Placement and Improvement of Soil to Support Structures, ASCE 1968

"Preloading for Heavy Industrial Installations"
by P.C. Kotzias and A.C. Stamatopoulos, in ASCE Placement and Improvement of Soil to Support Structures, ASCE 1968

"Precompression Analysis for Highway Embankments"
by R.J. Krizek and P.K.Krugmann, in Analysis and Design in Geotechnical Engineering, ASCE 1974

RE: Fill Settlement

In addition to the listed papers, if you are interested in long-term hydro-settlement of very deep fills:
"Hydrocompression Settlement of Deep Fills" by Duncan, ASCE, 1990.
