heat excahger tube length & inlet flow rate scale up

heat excahger tube length & inlet flow rate scale up

(OP)
Dear eng-tips forum members:

My new project plant capacity is scale up from 3000 tons to 6000 tons. And, new project shell and tube heat exchanger duty is scale up from 1000kw to 2000 kw. I wonder I only knew the heat excahger data sheet infromation from 3000 tons plant. How could I develope the heat exchagner size of the 6000 tons project?

Is posssible that the heat exchagner duty is 2 times greater than old one so I can conclude that the flow rate from tube side and shell side are also two times greater than old one?

Thank you so much for your help.

RE: heat excahger tube length & inlet flow rate scale up

delf,

That is true only if the temperatures are the same as for the smaller exchanger.

Speco

This is not quite so simple - it depends on temperatures as speco has stated but you also need to consider allowable pressure drops.  Adding length is not enough - this needs more careful analysis.
