NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

(OP)
I am currently using UG/NX4 and have noticed that some online suppliers offer downloadable 3D files that come in as .step files instead of the usual .stp (STEP).  I have not been able to figure out a way to translate these .step files (UG/NX4 only filters for .stp files.).  Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get to these models (I.E.: Rename the .step files to .stp, etc...).

RE: NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

Have you TRIED renaming the files from .step to .stp and rerunning them?

And how would one go about doing that?

If I open the folder the files are in, select the .step file, and MB3 "Rename" it only allows me to change the name not the suffix.

RE: NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

If you're running Windows what's stopping you from editing the file extension as well (and don't use 'rename', just highlight the 'step' letters and enter 'stp')?  Granted, it might yell at you telling you that some applications may not know what this means, but just ignore that and accept the edit.

When I open the folder window it does not display the extension so I can do as you mentioned.  Maybe I am missing something.

I did just find that when I double click the .step file in my Windows folder it opens in Teamcenter Visualization Mockup.  This part I already knew, but after further poking around I can File / Export... / Change File Format to "STEP AP203 (*.stp)" / OK

This will create the desired file with the .stp extension that UG/NX can import.

RE: NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

You've got Windows set-up to NOT show file extensions.  Go change that setting and then you will be able to edit the file extension as well as the file name.

Thanks John, found that under:

Control Panel / Appearance & Themes / Folder Options / View / Turned off "Hide extensions for known file types" / OK

Now the "Rename" function works as you stated.

Thanks again for being patient with me.

RE: NX4 User & Importing .step VS .stp Files?

Note that starting with NX 6.0, you can open STEP files with either the '.stp' or the '.step' file extensions without having to mess with the differences.

That would be a great improvement. We are upgrading to NX7.5 as of April 18.  I have used NX5 (At a previous job.) in the past and liked the improvements it had over our current NX4.

Thanks again John.
