Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

(OP)
Where do I find the ACI code requirements for the spacing of stirrups across the section of a wide beam.  I am detailing a 36" deep x 24" wide concrete grade beam and would like to know how many longitudinal bars to include in each closed stirrup.

RE: Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

24" is not really particularly wide for a concrete beam.

RE: Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

agree with csd72.

And I'm not aware of any different provisions for "wide beams" as opposed to ordinary beams.

RE: Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

I agree that 24" wide is not terribly wide.  We just designed some grade beams over 7' wide.  I'm not aware of any provision for a number of longitudinal bars that need to be enclosed in the stirrups.  The anchorage of the stirrup, however, is dependent upon having a longitudinal bar at the corners of the stirrups.

RE: Wide Concrete Beam Stirrup Spacing

There is a restricted lateral spacing in a number of codes but we are generally talking about where width is significantly greater than depth. Dont have a copy of ACI handy so I cannot comment on that.
