Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

(OP)
Hey all,

For a 13' steel beam subject to dead and snow loads, the following are the load combinations considered for strength and serviceability:
Strength:

1.2D+1.6S

Serviceability:

1S (Live Load Deflection)

1.5D (Long Term Creep Deflection)

Deflection is limited to L/600 or 0.26"

Does this seem like an appropriate approach?

RE: Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

1.5D seems conservative for Long Term Creep Deflection of a steel beam.

BA,

I was thinking that I saw the 1.5DL for long term creep in the masonry code (ACI530-05) or on a forum here.  Would that only apply to masonry lintels then.  Is there a long term dead load factor greater than 1 that should be checked for a steel beam supporting masonry then?  Thanks in advance!

RE: Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

Crackerjack,

I would use 1.0*D for creep of a steel beam because the magnitude of creep is negligible.  For masonry, 1.5D or more may be warranted.

Thanks again BA!

RE: Steel Beam Supporting Masonry

I am well aware of creep in wood, but I have never heard of creep in steel. Is there such a phenomenon? How about CMU lintels?
