Guard Rail behind segmental block retaining wall

Guard Rail behind segmental block retaining wall

Guard Rail behind segmental block retaining wall

(OP)
I designed a Segmental block retaining wall. Now, the City asked for a guard rail on the wall. I do not know how to calculate the loads due to guard rail and the effect on geogrid layers. I know that impact load per AASHTO is around 10 kips. Can somebody give some guidance on this? basically, I am looking for design/analysis procedures.

Thanks

RE: Guard Rail behind segmental block retaining wall

What type of block is it and are you dealing with a vehicle barrier or a "gaurdrail/handrail"

Take a look at these from keystone's web site:

http://www.keystonewalls.com/media/Technotes/rlbarr_rq.pdf

This is one of my favorite discussions.  Attached is a calculation I made for a handrail (non-vehicle).  You won't be able to run the program unless you have CSC's Tedds for word, but it is essentially a hand calc.  If you use it or review it any feed back would be great.  The green is values to enter, the purple is a section I need to update to how the program stores and uses numbers (it does not use the whole number result, there for it should make the result more conservative), the red are the results.
