Maximum base metal removal.

Maximum base metal removal.

Maximum base metal removal.

(OP)
Hello all.
I am a fairly new CWI, and have a question for anyone that can help. Where is D1.1 does it say the maximum amount of base metal that may be removed by grinding or any other means. I am thinking it will be a percentage of the base metal thickness, but can't seem to find it. 5.26 states that in a repair, "unacceptable portions of the weld shall be removed without substantial removal of the base metal." It doesn't say how much is substantial is. Any help is greatly appreciated. Ken

RE: Maximum base metal removal.

Hi emtrchr,
I'm fairly new to D1.1 myself, but C2.36.6.7 (2000) refers to toe grinding and a figure of 2mm or 5% of material thickness as being a limit.

Regards
