Temporary Shoring

Temporary Shoring

Temporary Shoring

(OP)
Does anyone know if why temporary shoring is designed with LRFD theses days- it seems so much more confusing for a temporary structures. In addition, its not as if ASD is unsafe?

Thanks,
Tim

RE: Temporary Shoring

teckert - who is insisting that LRFD must be used?  Seems like it would be up to the engineer doing the designing.  Most of the construction engineers I've worked with use ASD for shoring.

RE: Temporary Shoring

ASD is more conservative, so use it if you wish.

RE: Temporary Shoring

BA- with higher live loads, LRFD results in a more conservative design due to the higher SF on live loads than on DL?

RE: Temporary Shoring

Use ASD, not because it is conservative but because you need to deal with the actual forces when designing shoring.  For example is you shore a concrete structure and you need to jack the shoring to relieve stresses, you need to use ASD to determine the stresses.
