Another question:
My retaining wall is approximately 100m long, so do I need to provide expansion joints. What is the spacing

RE: Retaining Wall
Download a copy of the NYSDOT Bridge Manual. It explains everything.
RE: Retaining Wall
I would have thought something considerably less than 30 m for expansion joint spacing, particularly if large daily temperature fluctuations may be expected.

RE: Retaining Wall
Thanks for your post, but what do you mean by "just underneath the wall"? Do you mean that the footing can be constructued directly on the slopping ground? but I am afraid in this case of the sliding instability. Would you explain?
Thanks,
RE: Retaining Wall
There could be localized areas in NY with a large daily fluctuation in temperature - Buffalo comes to mind. Most of the projects I've worked on for NYSDOT have been in the NYC area, we've never had a problem with the maximum spacing.
