Suction piping for a VIL pump

Suction piping for a VIL pump

Suction piping for a VIL pump

(OP)
NFPA 20 2007 ed. 5.14.6.3.1  Unless the requirements of 5.14.6.3.2 are met, elbows and tees with a centerline plane parallel to a horizontal split case pump shaft shall not be permitted.

I always took this to mean centrifugal pumps in general.  Does this mean that the requirement does not apply to VIL's?  Does it fall into the same category as the air release not being required for an overhung impeller?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Suction piping for a VIL pump

OK, I'll bite. What's a VIL? You gotta realize we old Texas guys like myself hate acronyms.

my mistake!  Vertical In-Line

RE: Suction piping for a VIL pump

Does not apply. Vertical inline pumps have such an elbow cast into their lower housing.. To turn the flow 90 degrees into the impeller inlet. The only reason its an issue on horizontal split case is there are two inlets so you don't want an imbalance of flow at the split, and to each impeller inlet..
