Minimum Chamfer and/or Radius Edge Requirement For Brazing Steel Parts

Minimum Chamfer and/or Radius Edge Requirement For Brazing Steel Parts

Minimum Chamfer and/or Radius Edge Requirement For Brazing Steel Parts

(OP)
I'm currently working on a design that requires the brazing of a steel insert into a groove of a mating steel part.

I would like to know if there is a rule of thumb or table that will provide the minimum edge chamfer and/or radius size on the steel insert for the best capillary attraction between parts?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

I'm actually modifying a previous design which has a gap of 0.015" between the insert & mating part. After doing some research, I think this gap might be too large? Can anyone confirm?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Pretty sure that 15 mil is considered wide open in the brazing world. I've dealt with brazing nickel parts, and they require a 2-5 mil braze gap. Check the AWS Brazing Handbook - they have recommended gaps for different alloys.

This is why I asked, I also read (0.002 - 0.005"). The current insert is 0.375" fitting in a groove of 0.406". I also think the fit dimensions have to be tighter?
