Concers of a Basin out of service

Concers of a Basin out of service

Hey guys,

As an overview, there are series of clear water basins which gravity feed a pumping station. One of the clear water basins may need to be temporarily put of of service for repairs. The big question is, how will putting the clear water basin out of service affect the pumping station, if at all. Increased head and flooding are some of the concerns. My thoughs, without getting into great detail are that since the pumping station is gravity fed, if the pumps are turned off, the station would flood regardless of the basin being in service or not. The overall flooding elevation remains the same in both senarios, the only difference being is that the water would now flow through a by-pass line, as opposed to both the by-pass line and the lower basin to reach the pumping staion. Any thoughs are greatly appreciated. I attached an illustration below to help describe the situation.

How many pumps are in the station? Can enough water drain to the station to maintain fire protection to the area served?

1. There may be a concern that the bypass can not pass an adequate flow of water to the pumps. It is not possible to know with the information that you have posted.

2. Your sketch shows the finished water basin to have a higher elevation than the clear water basin. There may be a concern for flooding from the higher basin.

I didn't intend for my original question to be that vague. Many factors come in to play here. My main question is: How will the PRESSUE differ in the two scenarios. Forget the pumping stations, volumes and the pipe sizes. I'm just going for the concept...not calculations.

Please see the new diagram attached showing the location of a pressure control valve. Just looking for advice on how the PRESSURE would be affected between the two drawings. Neglect downstram head loss...I believe it will increase.

RE: Concers of a Basin out of service

One would expect the static pressure to remain the same. The dynamic pressure will fluctuate depending on the capacity of the system. Unless you are operating near the capacity of the system, one would not expect a significant difference in pressure.
