Steel API 5LX70 instead of ASTM A516 Gr 60

Steel API 5LX70 instead of ASTM A516 Gr 60

Hello everybody:

For the manufacture of the penstock (Ø 1,2 m) for a mini hydropower plant, it was specified to use steel ASTM A 560 Gr 60. The representative of the client is requesting to use steel API 5LX70.

Regardless of the prices or the calculations of the required plate thickness, is it technically correct to achieve that substitution? Are these steels interchangeables?

Any received information on this subject will be highly appreciated.

RE: Steel API 5LX70 instead of ASTM A516 Gr 60

Neither spec is interchangeable, in fact quite different things entirely.  One is a spec for steel castings, the other is a spec for pipe!  One is high strength normal temperature ,low carbon steel, the other is high strength, high temperature, high alloy chrome, stainless and I wouldn't think you'd need that in a penstock, so what gives?
