Rack storage area covered by the rack system

Rack storage area covered by the rack system

I know I have seen it.

130,000 sq. ft. building with rack storage of class IV commodity to 25' high.

Four overhead systems are required.

Rack sprinklers are required with one level of sprinklers in each rack.  ESFR on this one is out of the question.

I know it's in the standards somewhere but where does it say the area covered by my in rack system must:

1) be below the overhead and

2) not exceed 40,000 sq. ft?

Where does it say I can't have a single rack system cover all the racks?

RE: Rack storage area covered by the rack system

NFPA 13 2010 8.13.1 System Size

The area protected by a single system of sprinklers in racks shall not exceed 40,000 sq. ft of floor area occupied by the racks, including aisles, regardless of the number of levels of in rack sprinklers.

RE: Rack storage area covered by the rack system

Not 100% sure what you mean by "be below the overhead"

but, NFPA 13 2010 16.2.4.1.4 In rack sprinklers at one level only for storage up to and including 25 ft high shall be located at the first tier level at or above one half of the storage height.

I was looking for NFPA 13 2010 8.13.1 System Size.  I knew it was in there but couldn't find it and needed an answer fast. :)
