Double fed Induction Generators

Double fed Induction Generators

Double fed Induction Generators

(OP)
Double fed induction generators can be used to generate a fixed frequency with a variable shaft speed by driving the rotor with a variable frequency.
What are the limits for the mechanical speed range over which this type of generator can be used? most wind powered units that I have sen still use a gear box to step the speed up before driving the double fed induction generator.

Best regards,
Mark.

RE: Double fed Induction Generators

The main reason for stepping the speed is to reduce the size and cost of generators.
