Does anybody have examples on Defelection Determination (Spangler Formula)

I need to prove to the RR Company that a 36" Casing pipe (coated) is thick(.75") enough to support E-80 Loading.  The casing pipe is going to be approx 3' below the RR Tracks.  2-A modified Stone will be used for backfill.

Hold on a sec.

Calculating the deflection and controlling with the allowable value is one thing, but when you are talking about a crossing (which I assume is your case since you are talking about casing and E-80 loading)then there are other considerations. Always check the requirements of the authority that has jurisdiction over the road or RR. Most often they have their own restriction and limitations specially regarding minimum depth of passage. Especially for RR the settlement of the casing is crucial and I haven't seen a RR authority who does not have his own crossing requirements (and normally it's more than 3').

Then take a look to the project spec and standards in your field. I assume that you are dealing with a pipeline. API RP 1102, "Steel Pipelines Crossing Railroads And Highways" sets a minimum cover for crossings at highway and RR both for carrier  and casing. For casing pipe under RR crossing, API states the minimum cover measured from top of the pipe to the base of the rail:
a) under track structure proper, except secondary and industry tracks: 5.5 feet
b) under track structure proper, for secondary and industry tracks: 4.5 feet
c) under all other surfaces within the R.O.W: 3 feet
d) for pipelines transporting HVL: 4 feet

So you see it's not only the mater of calculations.
