Location of Program configuration files

Location of Program configuration files

(OP)
I've been having a few crash issues on the Solidworks workstation at work. Our IT guy wants me to use a different log-in for a few weeks to isolate whether the problem is with the log in file or something else. SO no problem...but I want to load in all my config changes from the default install. Can anyone help me to locate where my configurations are saved ?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Location of Program configuration files

There are no true config files for SOlidWorks All of the settingsSystem Options and Tools > Customize settings for Keyboard shortcuts all get written to the registry and you should or must (I prefer the latter) be a Local Admin/Power User on your PC to play well with SolidWorks and allow you to change settings.

Using the CopySettingsWizard as CorBlimeyLimey mentioned would be a good way to check if it's a settings issue. Make sure prior to doing any tests people use the export option to save off a copy of there Own settings so they can be rewritten to the registry later with the Import option. This is just in case loading in new settings makes the system perform worse or they loose their Alt+0=Instant-3d or mouse gestures they use.

In many cases when I did tech support I suggested to people that they copy settings of someone else and in most cases it fixed any issues. I always keep a copy of my settings on a flash drive so I can use my settings on another persons machine.

When doing so Always save off a settings file with there name and a few underscores at the front so that it will be placed in the top of the folder they are saved in which defaults to Application Data.

I wish SolidWorks had plain old config files like almost all other systems have because it would be easy to load and unload options without having to restart the program as SolidWorks does. I think this may be due to the fact that SolidWorks only reads these on start-up and may not be able to reload settings from the registry on demand. If they were stored in a config file, then this would not be an issue. I'd suggest putting an enhancement request in to give an option to use a config.

Thank you both. I did put in a request for the Info from our VAR today and they promptly informed me about the  save and recall registries function though the start menu. I know I had come across it in the past...but I couldn't remember where. Thanks CoreBlimey.... I'm always impressed with your willingness to help and wide ranging knowledge of Solidworks. Great idea stashing the reg configues on a flash drive MJcole.
