Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

(OP)
Hi all,
In ASME IX QW 253, deletion of a backing in a weld joint design is considered Non-essential, does that mean that
1. If the procedure is qualified with a backing, you can weld without backing
2. If the procedure is qualified without backing, you can weld with a backing
3. The main question is, I have a procedure qualified without a backing, and there's a need to weld with a sleeve to protect internal coating, does that require re-qualification or the sleeve can be used based on this part of the code;

Thanks a lot.

RE: Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

No, the WPS can be used for backing application. For example, depositing a fillet weld or partial penetration weld.

RE: Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

1. Yes, provided the welder is qualified without backing.
2. Yes.
3. No, per metengr

RE: Addition and deletion of backing in ASME IX

1.  Yes, but the welder or welding operator has to be qualified to weld without backing.

2.  Yes.

3.  Probably doesn't require requalification, but a little more info will help.  What kind of weld does the sleeve require?

Thanks everyone for your inputs.

@DVWE the weld is butt stick welding, and the backing is a tuboscope sleeve that's used to protect internal coating.

You should be OK then.
