ACI Update for PE test

ACI Update for PE test

ACI Update for PE test

(OP)
I'm helping a friend of mine study for his PE test (Civil - Construction), y'know, answering questions where I can, throwing pop quiz items at him, showing him alternative refernce books where he can find information faster, etc, and noticed in the list of references they still have ACI 318-05 and IBC 2006.

My question is how often do they update their reference standards?  Since ACI 318-08 has been out for quite a while now, I'm kind of surprised to see them still reference 318-05.  Same with IBC 2009 vs. 2006.

Just curious.

RE: ACI Update for PE test

The "they" you are referring to does that mean NCEES or the test provider?

RE: ACI Update for PE test

NCEES, since they're the governing body over required references for the test.

RE: ACI Update for PE test

I was making sure you were not referring to the municipalities that actually govern the codes.

As far as NCEES is concerned, my impression is that they will adopt the new code one in has been in place and "common place" long enough for practicing engineers to be familiar with that addition.

Personally, I have still not used the IBC 2009 (which means the ACI318-08 has not been opened either) because none of the cities I have worked in has adopted it yet.  However, I would expect the NCEES to adopt the 2009 within the next year.

RE: ACI Update for PE test

In the NCEES SE 1 exam about 5 years ago you did not go digging through codes, they were very basic formulas that never change.

RE: ACI Update for PE test

I used outdated versions of ACI when I took the PE and it didn't seem to matter. But, if I remember correctly, there was a few code specific questions from ACI, IBC, ASCE 7. So it might behoove "your friend" to have the codes listed on the NCEES outline.
I know for sure there was specific "look up" type questions out of the IBC.

RE: ACI Update for PE test

make sure you have the correct code, there may be year specific codes referenced. I made that mistake when I took the exam many years ago, I studied the 1988 UBC and the test required use of the 1985 version. Luckily I had brought both, but unfortunately I had tabbed and made copious notes in the wrong one.
