ASME IX or API 1104

ASME IX or API 1104

ASME IX or API 1104

(OP)
Hi,API 1104 states "This standard covers the gas and arc welding of butt, fillet,and socket welds in carbon and low-alloy steel piping used inthe compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum,petroleum products, fuel gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogenand, where applicable, covers welding on distributionsystems" It does not say anything about water. I'm interested in pipelines of 6-10" that'll carry water from frac' ponds, inpoundments, and water bodies to frac' locations. I'm thinking that ASME IX welding procedure applies more to it since of of the B31 codes addresses water.Is it better to use ASME IX for such application, or API 1104 even if API in the scope did not mention water at all.Advice please?

RE: ASME IX or API 1104

I would recommend you follow ASME B31 Piping Code (B31.3), which refers you to ASME Section IX.

RE: ASME IX or API 1104

ASME B31.3 is generally used as the design Code for this application; in which case, ASME IX is used to define the requirements within a welding procedure specification and qualification thereof and also to qualify welders and welding operators.

That's what I thought. A million thanks for your inputs

RE: ASME IX or API 1104

Good Afternoon,

Just a note for your future reference:

CFR 49, PART 192—TRANSPORTATION OF NATURAL AND OTHER GAS BY PIPELINE: MINIMUM FEDERAL SAFETY STANDARDS, refers you to the following codes:

ASME Sec IX = Welding procedure & welder qualification
API 1104(Welding of pipelines & related facilities)= Welding Code
B31.4 & B31.8 = Pipeline & Facilites
B31.3 = Process Piping
B31.1 = Boiler Piping

Hope this helps!

Try sticking to asking the question only in one forum.  You have received additional answers in Pipelines & Piping.
