Hi,
API 1104 states "This standard covers the gas and arc welding of butt, fillet,and socket welds in carbon and low-alloy steel piping used in
the compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum,
petroleum products, fuel gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen
and, where applicable, covers welding on distribution
systems"
It does not say anything about water. I'm interested in pipelines of 6-10" that'll carry water from frac' ponds, inpoundments, and water bodies to frac' locations. I'm thinking that ASME IX welding procedure applies more to it since of of the B31 codes addresses water.
Is it better to use ASME IX for such application, or API 1104 even if API in the scope did not mention water at all.
Advice please?

For steel water pipe look at the requirements of AWWA Specification C-200, attached is the Points of Contact at AWWA

Consider poly vinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, Polyethylene (PE), or ABS thermoplastic pressure pipe as cost effective alternatives.

Agreed, AWWA is the best way to go for steel water pipe welding.

Does it matter if this water piping has pump and/or compression stations, and if it delivers directly to the completions pad? in other words, can this AWWA code be applicable to water piping facilities linked to drilling, completion and production sites?

mysarah, you should maybe look into what your contractural / jurisdictional obligations are. These may inform your futher efforts:)

Additionally ASME IX is only a Welding Procedure / welder qualification Code.  Your piping would fall under ASME B31.3, and the procedure and welders qualified/certified under ASME IX.  If I remember correctly, AWWA requires procedure(s) and welders qualified/certified under ASME IX.

AWWA C200 is for the manufacturing of steel water pipe, it includes references to ASME IX and AWS D1.1 for welding procedures.  For field joint welding of steel water pipe AWWA C206 is the appropriate standard from that series.

I agree however, ASME B31.3 may be the correct pipe standard for your application.
