Can anyone recommend an ideal CFD software for the design of an automotive air-intake system..?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

No...need to design an "Automotive" air-intake system for a Subaru!

One can use a super-duper CFD program to design an intake manifold and then commit an epic fail as I witnessed recently: The offender proudly showed fancy screenshots showing streamlines of his manifold design.  The fail occurred because he assumed air would be drawing through all 4 cylinders SIMULTANEOUSLY and STEADILY.

Epic fail.

Some hand calculations and common design sense will suffice to give 95% of the result of a PROPERLY done CFD-developed and -optimised model.

The corollary to the above is that an improperly/poorly done CFD-developed manifold could wind up performing worse than the old-fashioned calculation and common sense method.

Boundary conditions for a 3D intake manifold model are very important.  Most OEMs would run coupled 1D-3D simulations, with the 1D model covering most of the system and providing boundary conditions for the 3D model.  You need to be really committed and looking for the last few percent before you go down this route.  Or just interested, having plenty of spare time, no deadlines and access to free (or subsidised) software.
