Filling of empty spray header for surge analysis

Filling of empty spray header for surge analysis

Filling of empty spray header for surge analysis

(OP)
Hello, I am doing a surge analysis of a empty spray system. The system consists of a high riser-line (vertical pipe) connected to a horizontal spray nozzle header. The riser line is drained before the pump is started. When the pump starts the pipes fill up. As a first assumption I assumed the void front was flat/distinct (a step). However, I am curious, how the filling part looks like in reality. What kind of air intrusion can I expect? Due to the low resistance in the system the water speed is high prior to the filling of the spray header (froude number well above 1).

I realize that it is a hard question to answer in detail but if someone can suggest any reading tips about these events or speak from their own experience it would be helpful.

best regards

Probably much less than you think.  Try a test with water in some clear plastic pipe.
