high speed gearbox?

high speed gearbox?

(OP)
Anyone know of a speed increasing gearbox that can transmit at least 10 hp at 16000 rpm output shaft speed? Gear ratio in the neighborhood of 1:5. I was thinking of running a Boston Gear helical gear reducer in reverse, but I called the guys there and this speed I want to run at is far above the rated speed range of these gearboxes.

RE: high speed gearbox?

Some motorcycle transmissions operating in reverse direction  power flow might do it.

RE: high speed gearbox?

You could look around for a Sundyne Gearbox.  I don't know if they have one that can be driven by 10 hp as all of ours have much larger motors. We had some much smaller pumps at one time but don't know the figure number.
These thing are prohibitively expensive from Sundyne but there are quite few on the surplus market. In our fiasco we paid a restocking fee on 10 pumps and put 6 on the surplus market.

Also I've seen some Epicyclic Gear Sets that would resolve you problem.  My references are currently failing me.

Watch about turning a gear  box around as there are some limitations on the rated capacity.

In machine tools, speedups like that are traditionally done with flat cloth belts.  Remember, 10HP at that speed is relatively little torque.

There are some commercial superchargers that use small timing belts.  Take a look.

If you can use a belt drive, you could adapt some of the racecar blower drive systems.  It's not at all uncommon to drive 50% OD on these and the power transmitted is unbelievable. Many hundred.  I've run 60% od and run a whole year on the same belt.

My streetrod runs a little underdrive but I drove it 12k miles last year and the belt looks like new.  I would suggest you use hard anodized pulleys.

Here is a start.

Thanks guys. I will probably just go with a belt.

RE: high speed gearbox?

A belt is probably the best way to go.

Check out these Vortron high pressure air blowers. These run at those sort of speeds and power levels. You might even be able to buy some Vortron spare parts to do your job....

1:5 may need 2 stages of reduction with a belt
