High force quick-release
High force quick-release
(OP)
I am designing a drop-tower impact tester, but also toying with a horizontal sled alternative (powered by an air bag). Either way, I am going to need a release mechanism capable of instantly releasing a 300kg mass (in the drop-tower case), or up to 10,000kg (100kN) of preload in the airbag case. I have investigated the alternative of switching the air supply to trigger the pneumatic system, but the flow area required is very large and the switching time very short.
Is there a commercially available latch that can be released under these high forces without wear and consequent reiability issues or will I have to design it myself? Cycle time is low - perhaps only a couple of releases per day.

Engineering is the art of creating things you need, from things you can get.
