NX6 translation of solid objects using IGES

NX6 translation of solid objects using IGES

NX6 translation of solid objects using IGES

Can the IGES translator in Unigraphic NX6 Convert Solids.
Or wil they be converted into sheets.
I would like them to remain Solids.

RE: NX6 translation of solid objects using IGES

The short answer is: yes, the IGES standard supports solids and the NX translator does its best to adhere to the standard. If you are importing IGES files into NX, there is an option to sew sheet bodies together where possible. If the sheets enclose a volume, it will be considered a solid body.

However, data translation is usually not so cut and dry. Translation is a 2 step process (export from A, import to B) and errors can occur in either step. Also, what may be considered a solid body in A may not be in B, depending on user options, modeling tolerances, limitations of the program, etc etc.

Based on personal experience, IGES files are not my first choice. If both programs use the parasolid kernel, then parasolid files are the ideal candidate. STEP files are a good 2nd choice followed by IGES. On a couple of rare occasions I have used VRML files.

What about translating a Solid created in NX6 out using
IGES is there a way to be sure when imported into another system
it is a soild.

RE: NX6 translation of solid objects using IGES

There are no 100% guarantees in data translation.

A good old Iges-joke :
The definition of a camel is a horse that passed an Iges translation smile
That said, Iges do sometimes change things very slightly and sometimes quite much. The success also depends a lot on the other system. I have seen cases where "the other system" could not handle the Blends that NX had created. In that case it wasn't NX / Iges but the receiver.
