Gravel compaction

Gravel compaction

Gravel compaction

(OP)
I have the following generic question.
If the sub-grade in particular area is 43kPa and on top is installed compacted 150mm thick of 25mm crushed gravel, how much will increase the overal bearing capasity in that area?
Thanks

RE: Gravel compaction

Not much.  The shear strength of compacted gravel (unless it is signficantly confined) is not so much greater than the subgrade, so there would still be a "punching" effect under high loads.

Thank you for the response. How I can calculate it, what is the fomula that I can use in this case?

RE: Gravel compaction

Sounds like you need to get your hands on a good design manual for roads or industrial floors, either should have some good information on this type of thing.
