Lapping Compound - Recycling possibilities?

Lapping Compound - Recycling possibilities?

Lapping Compound - Recycling possibilities?

(OP)
Hello,

I work at a facility that manufactures steel gears. The gear teeth are finished using an oil-based lapping slurry. Eventually the slurry is spent and the lapping machine is recharged with fresh product.

Historically for us the spent product is solidified then landfilled. I am trying to locate ways to avoid landfilling, such as removing the steel fines, recovering the oil, use in another application, etc.

I attached an MSDS of the base product prior to use. If anyone is aware of a process that may work I've got 3,000 gallons to work with...thanks!

RE: Lapping Compound - Recycling possibilities?

If just a matter of fines you should be able to filter then reuse.  If there are other contaminants you would need some other process.  How often do you recharge?

Talk to the sales rep that is selling this material. He works with other customers and can probably tell you how others are disposing of this material.
