Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

(OP)
Hi, do you know any company in the world who builds or delivers any kind of boiler, heater, oven or furnace that is electric and could be used to heat up molten salts of nitrate compound? Thanks.

RE: Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

I don't know offhand. But this sounds like something that could be used in the heat treatment of metals.  So I'd try asking in a metalworking or metallurgy group.

I've actually got some books on hobby metalworking that address molten salt bath equipment. But most of them are on a DIY level. Like how to use the kitchen oven for such work and not get caught by the wife.

RE: Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

We were doing some engineering for a solar power developer.  Their proprietary design stored energy in molten salt. One concept used a temporary gas fired heater that melted the salts during the initial fill of the molten salt storage tank. The tank had lots of heaters.

I briefly looked at using electric heaters to melt the salt, but the MW's needed was too much for the particular site.

Try checking with Chromalox or the other electric heater element suppliers.  One of their customers may design this type of specialty melter.

RE: Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

molten salts was used for decades in heat treating, so should be a long list of furnace manufacturers that have this expertise, detailed out as the best way to heat up a bath of molten salt.

I believe molten salts after the parts were taken out of the furnace the parts were quenched in the molten salt bath.  I believe there was a temperature that made the salts more stable and not corrosive.  But its been a while since I was in that industry.

RE: Molten Salts Electric Heater/Boiler

Electric induction furnace? They USE molten salt in electric induction furnaces for treating steel, so I would imagine the furnace itself melts the salt to begin with.
