P&ID

(OP)
Hi,

I started a new job in industrial consulting engineering. I am working on a gold mine development in Ontario. I was given a PFD of a Potable Water Distribution System and need to produce a P&ID and then a GA (General Arragement). The water is taken from a lake through inlets and brought to a Pump House which contains 2 Submerged Vertical Turbine Raw Water Pumps, a Submerged Vertical Turbine Fire Jockey Pump, a Submerged Vertical Turbine Fire Pump, and a Diesel Tank which provides power to one of the Fire Pumps. The water then goes to a Water Treatment System which includes the actual Treatment System and 2 Potable Water Pumps. The Treatment System and the 2 Potable Water Pumps are all housed in a "Container" or Pre-Fab Housing. A Potable Water Tank is located just external to the container nd holds the water after it leaves the Treatment System. The Potable Water Pumps pump Water to a Permanent Camp for the Workers. The Drain from the Permanent Camp and the Water Treatment System go to 2 Submerged Sanitary Pumps which then pump the water to a Sewage Treatment Plant which then pumps the water to 2 other Submerged Sabitary Pumps.

I am new to the world of consulting and have never seen or done a P&ID. I was wondering if you had any suggestions or if there were some similar examples out there that I could base myself on. Are there free online tutorials or books out there that could be of aid? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RE: P&ID

I do p&id's all the time and you definitly need to see one to give you the symbology and instrumentation tag nomenclature.  Good luck...

RE: P&ID

If your familiar with HVAC consulting at all, then I would correlate them to a control diagram.  (In my former life I did P&ID's for power plants).  They show the air flow or water flow, and provide the components in the system.

Design your system with the P&ID, make sure you have whatever control valves or byapsses you need.  See if you can get a senior engineer to bless it.  Then design it in the GA.

As for tutorials, no idea, but aske a senior guy at the company for a somewhat simiar job, and review that P&ID, youll get an idea of what they are looking for.
