thread507-238142: Masonry veneer and shelf angle

Poul75, you posted a thread concerning Masonry Veneer walls over 11m (36ft).

Your question was:

'A constractor ask me if it's possible to not install shelf angles when the masonry veneer (brick) wall exceed 11m (empirical method)?

This implies that brick becomes structural in compression. Lateral loads are supported by structural backing made with steel studs. Is it possible to evaluate the compressive resistance of a masonry veneer as a non-reinforced masonry wall?'

What did you find finally? This question seems to be back from time to time with contractor or builders ... they all want to avoid the shelf angle but the standard seems is quite clear.

Thank you
