Partial Discharge testing

Partial Discharge testing

Partial Discharge testing

(OP)
Hi,
What is the minimum network voltage where partial discharge may occur? I am led to believe it is approx. 5kV but cannot find documentation to support this. We have had a query raised regarding PD testing on 3.3kV switchgear but at the moment don't think this is required. Any advice would be appreciated.

RE: Partial Discharge testing

It depends on the conductor gap distances, insulating materials, etc, but a general rule of thumb for the typical conductor spacings used in transformers, switchgear, etc is that corona activity starts >2-3kV.

Having said that, 3.3kV would be pretty close to the inception voltage and PD testing probably isn't warranted. Anyway, IEC 62271-200 (2003) Annex B1 talks about how PD testing is only really appropriate for metal-enclosed switchgear / controlgear with organic insulating materials or fluid-filled compartments.

Thanks juleselec. The boards in question don't have organic insulating materials or fluid filled compartments. Also, one minor point that I should also have made is that it is a 3.3kV system operating on 11kV rated Reyrolle LMT2 switchgear. Probably this last sentence should make it a no brainer..... smile
