New to PIC (how to get started?)

(OP)
Hi everyone,

I am new to PIC. I am planning to buy a PIC programmer, and do some fun things with it. I realised that the PIC programmer will only write the HEX files to the chip. But to get the HEX file, I will need to write it in assembly or get a compiler. Can anyone recommend me where to get a "preferrably free" compiler or assembler? I would appreciate if anyone could recommend me references, links, books to : how to write programs for PICs...

Cheers

RE: New to PIC (how to get started?)

If your talking about PIC micros then get a copy of their free compiler (comes with their programmer and request free CD online-MPLAB). You can write it in assembly and generate hex files.

RE: New to PIC (how to get started?)

Oops. "and" should of been "or". You can get the CD free online without buying the programmer.
