Overhead Line Design

Overhead Line Design

Can any one lead me to the best resources for loads on overhead line insulator assemblies, in particular the modeling of braced post insulators.  I understand finite elements may be necessary but I would want to know the underlining theory and also hopefully be advised on a freely available or low-cost utility or package to ease the analysis.

RE: Overhead Line Design

To what standards are you required to design?

Ron,

I wish to apply NGK-Locke Polymer Line Post Insulators or similar and verify the load charts with theory.

Thank you.

Ron,

I can be more specific about the standard: IEC 61952

Looking at the spec sheets, it looks like the manufacturer load tested them, which is probably the most appropriate thing to do in this sort of situation.

Unless you've somehow got the material properties of the polymers they're using for the insulator you're not going to be able to model this. Even if you did get the material properties, their source would be the manufacturer's tests, which is what you're trying to verify in the first place.
