Notch Toughness for SA-106 Gr B /PED Weld Qualification
Notch Toughness for SA-106 Gr B /PED Weld Qualification
(OP)
We have performed a weld procedure qualification test with a 16" dia. Sch 160 SA-106Gr B Pipe. I have used 3 weld procedures in the performance of this test.GTAW (.375" t) GMAW/MC (.625"t) and SAW (.687"t includes cap pass).
This was done to gain flexabilty with using differnt combos of weld processes. PED requires I do a notch toughness test for the material, that portion is understood to be -20F. This will require specimens from BM,WM & HAZ. My question does it apply for all 3 weld procedures & do I need 9 samples?

RE: Notch Toughness for SA-106 Gr B /PED Weld Qualification
I would weld up a thick plate coupon [T = 1-inch or more, t = at least 3/8-inch] for the Charpys, and keep careful measurements of the deposited weldmetal for each process, so that the WM & HAZ specimines really represent each process.
Please post how it works out. I have never heard of a 3-process weld procedure, and am very interested.
