ASME B31.3 code clarification

ASME B31.3 code clarification

(OP)
Under the B31.3 requirements for Severe Cyclic Conditions, what percentage of socket welds that have not been tested by radiography or UT must be tested by the MT or PT methods?

Under the B31.3 requirements for Elevated Temperature Fluid Service, what percentage of socket welds in P-No. 4 and P-No. 5 materials that have not been tested by radiography must be tested by the MT or PT methods?

I have looked at 341.4.3 & 341.4.4 and do not see a definitive answer.  Thanks in advance!

RE: ASME B31.3 code clarification

See B31.3, 341.4.3  under other examination.....

(b) Other Examination. All circumferential butt and
miter groovewelds and all fabricated branch connection
welds comparable to those shown in Fig. 328.5.4E shall
be examined by 100% radiography in accordance with
para. 344.5, or (if specified in the engineering design)
by 100% ultrasonic examination in accordance with para.
344.6. Socket welds and branch connection welds which
are not radiographed shall be examined by magnetic
particle or liquid penetrant methods in accordance with
para. 344.3 or 344.4

See 341.4.4

(b) Additional Examination. The examination requirements
of para. 341.4.1(b) apply with the following exceptions:
(1) Fabrication for longitudinal welds in P-No. 4
and P-No. 5 materials, except those in components made
in accordance with a listed specification, shall be examined
by 100% radiography in accordance with para.
344.5, or by 100% ultrasonic examination in accordance
with para. 344.6.
(2) Socket welds and branch connection welds in
P-No. 4 and P-No. 5 materials that are not radiographed
or ultrasonically examined shall be examined by magnetic
particle or liquid penetrant methods in accordance
with para. 344.3 or 344.4.

Thank you for the answer.  Does this mean that 100% must be MT or PT?

RE: ASME B31.3 code clarification

Jellopool,
Yes, 100% is required,

Also, if the Cyclic involves vibration, make the socket welds a 2:1 weld.  The nuclear power industry has found out that vents and drains socket-welded in and subjected to severe vibration [harmonics] crack out unless the pipe-leg of the socketweld is about twice as 'tall' as the leg onto the fitting.  Cheap insurance.
