Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

(OP)
I assign descriptive names or variable names to cells that store my input data or my formula results.  I might use the letter L for the length of a beam that is stored in B25.

When I edit a cell fomula that has L in it, the variable name immediately changes to B25. That may be OK if my fomula is in D25 but not for a formula in D75.

Is there a setting in Excel 2007 that will retain the cell names while editing a formula?

RE: Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

Hmmm. Doesn't happen in my Excel 2000.

As soon as I finish editing a cell formula and press the enter key, all the varible names appear replacing the cell references. Am I victim of progress?

RE: Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

I just made a very simple sheet with two input cells, L and W and one formula, W * L = A and there was no problem editing the formula. So, it's not Excel 2007. But what?

I opened another spreadsheet not currently being used and my problem reappeared in that sheet. I will upload a "problem sheet".

I always save my files in the '97-2003 file format.

RE: Seeing Names not Cell Ref While Editing Formulas

OK, apparently, your sheet was actually imported from somewhere else, and the named ranges in your equations don't actually exist.  IF you go to the Options|Transition amd uncheck the Sheet Options, you'll see that your equations are actually all based on cell references, and not named ranges.

In 2007, I went to Options> Advanced > Lotus Compatibility Options and unchecked a couple of options called Transition Formula Evaluation and Transition Formula Entry.

I am not sure what those options actually do, but I no longer saw the names in the formulas. However, The cells still retained their names, so I used "Apply Names" and now I am in business.

Thanks, you saved my sanity!
