modelling question

(OP)
I have a question which is difficult for me to express in English.
I have a 3D geometry consisting of several types of beam (a steel frame). I want to model the surfaces of the beams as plate elements, so i need only the central plane of each of the solid sides of the beams. However, as this is a 3D geometry, I have a lot of excess information (fillets, outer wall, inner wall) but no center plane of the sides, and also no intersection of beams (for instance diagonal stiffeners). Is there an option in femap to easily transform a 3D beam with inner and outer wall to surface without thickness?
thanks
rob

Yes, exactly what i was looking for. Thank you

RE: modelling question

Hello!

I've made a rod model in SolidEdge and I've opened it in Femap. It is a simple U form to check some calculations. I've made a beam model. One leg of the U has 6 and the another has 5 constrains, it works very well.

At second step I've closed the U form in the middle with a cross rod and I've used the same forces and constrains, but there is a little problem with this. The femap stops and say: there is a problem with the KLL matrix... what is that problem? I've got enough constrains, should I join or weld the cross rod to the vertical rods?

Thanks.

RE: modelling question

do you have multiple elements on the cross rod ? are they rods (or beams) ?

btw, it's not polite to hi-jack other people's threads ... start your own with your question.

RE: modelling question

Hey guys!
im working in femap software and i have a problem connecting solid/shell elements.could you tell me how to connect them properly?

RE: modelling question

ditto ... if you have a question, start a thread, don't hijack someone else's.

btw, usually a web of RBEs is used to connect #D elements to 2D.
