Large UPS (4.3kva+) battery question...

Large UPS (4.3kva+) battery question...

(OP)
Hi,
I have several large 4.3kva or bigger UPS systems installed at a location. Unfortunately my location (overseas) is making it very difficult to obtain the proper replacement batteries. I wanted to know if there is fundamentally anything different between a 12v 75AH "UPS Battery" or a sealed automotive battery of the same specs? I can not find the "UPS" batteries locally however I can find car batteries with similar specs. I've searched the web and can't seem to find an answer for this. Can a sealed car battery be used in a UPS system??
Thank you.

RE: Large UPS (4.3kva+) battery question...

It would probably work for a while, but car batteries are not intended for the deep discharge cycles that it would have with a UPS. It would likely not last very long.

RE: Large UPS (4.3kva+) battery question...

It would be better to use some 12V marine/RV batteries. These tolerate deep discharge cycles with much less damage than automotive batteries.

These tend not to be available as often in sealed versions. So you might need to begin a program of battery maintenance to top off the electrolyte.

RE: Large UPS (4.3kva+) battery question...

If you cannot get the exact rating or something close enough. you could use similar sealed batteries but be careful not to fall for those ones that generally are used for cranking generators.
