Material for 'non skid/slip' consumer product application

Material for 'non skid/slip' consumer product application

(OP)
Hello,

I'm looking for an injection moldable material that could be used as non-skid/slip component on a consumer product.

The non-skid component will be injection molded into the correct form and then bonded via some type of adhesive to an ABS shell. The adhesive will be selected based on the non-skid material that is chosen.

The purpose of the non-skid component is to prevent the consumer product from moving while it is being used. The non-skid component would be expected to interact with hard flat surface, like a kitchen counter, and also with soft surfaces, like an easy chair.

I was looking at NBR, EPDM, or PVC...but not sure if any of those are right or wrong. Not sure how to spec them out either.

Other factors: injection moldable, cheap, indoor household temp range, resistance to water, bondable with 'generic' adhesives, durable, low compression set, etc...

tia,

sani

RE: Material for 'non skid/slip' consumer product application

EPDM seems like your best bet. It is skid-resistant and has favorable properties in the fields you're looking for. Pretty cheap too.

What makes the very expensive EPDM polymer cheap is the fact you can use very large quantities of relatively inexpensive fillers and oil.

It'd probably good to add "non-staining" to your list of needs for the rubber material. A rubber containing a staining ingredient like an antiozonant, for example, might stain a kitchen counter or fabrics. I've seen floor mats stain a linoleum floor, presumably from staining antidegradants or other materials.

Since EPDM doesn't need antiozonants or antioxidants (for most applications), it'd probably be a good choice.

EPDM can have a very objectionable odor...
