Corrosion Inhibitor

(OP)
Not sure if this is the place to ask but thought as good as any.

We have a project coming up that will cause some ASME carbon steel boiler equipment to be stored outside for expectedly 6 months and perhaps longer in full blown, cold (think snow) winter environment. All equipment to have all openings capped but I think we need some type of corrosion inhibitor. My ultimate goal is to avoid pitting.

Lots of different stuff out there to choose from. The supplier/fabricator) has reccomended the use of Cortec vpCI 649 mixed in with the hydro water. Reading brochures I am not convinced this is the best choice. A nitrogen purge adds a significant cost to this as does dry storage.

Do any of you have any success stories using other medium?

RE: Corrosion Inhibitor

Can I ask why the Just in Time delivery option isn't looked at. If it is cost, then have the material prchased now, pay for staorage at manufacture, then progress manuafcature when requried (work back from requried date on site, delivery time, manufacture time etc).

I would hazzrad a guess that paying for storage (which may not even be requried) would be cheaper than paying for any corrossion inhibitators, or any remedial work requried later.

Just my thoughts.

RE: Corrosion Inhibitor

A nitrogen blanket wouldn't be very expensive at all.  Just a regulator on the supply set at a few psig and a RV with a much higher setting for protection.  You wouldn't have a constant flow just maintain a nitrogen atmosphere.

RE: Corrosion Inhibitor

We haven't had good luck on off site storage.  Things like not being well protected, One very large CS heater, hairpin, was sold during a cleanup at the storage facility.  The heat exchanger fabricators the I've been to really don't have the facilities to store the complete part only the components.

We used VPI, vapor Phase Inhibitor, along with bagging and boxing. If you decide to go in house here is some products from Cortec that will do the job.

RE: Corrosion Inhibitor

The cortec stuff you spray in after hydro seems to work well.

better than hydro liquid.
