Allowable Edge Distance in Pinned Connection

Allowable Edge Distance in Pinned Connection

Allowable Edge Distance in Pinned Connection

(OP)
I am designing a pin connection to take a large tensile load in a very small area.

I need the edge distance to be smaller than the AISC Section D5.2 requires.  Ive gone up in metal grade and increased the depth but the edge distance is still not up to code.  If the shear rupture/tensile rupture/tensile yield and bearing strengths are well above the applied loads after the safety of factor has been considered....am I ok?

I suppose Im wondering how it would fail.  Would it deform? Circle to oval...Thanks JW

Post a sketch showing clearances, loads and your calculations.

Was cyclic loading failure considered,if present?
I suppose that you could increase the thickness between the hole and the edge if minimum edge distance is not met.

RE: Allowable Edge Distance in Pinned Connection

I think the failure mode would be to tear or split.

When the distance beyond the pin hole is less than 1.33*beff, the capacity is governed by double shear.  The AISC Engineering Journal published research by Tolbert and Hackett on this condition in the 2nd Quarter, 1974.  If that article is no longer available, let me know and I'll scan it.

Would you mind scanning that article? I am interested in reading it and couldnt find it.

I went ahead and redesigned the system so that the edge distance was met.  Thanks for the replies.
