NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

(OP)
I need a lateral design value (Z) for a screw size and member connection not shown in the tables. I tried setting up an excel file to do the yield limit calculations (all 6), I think my file is correct, but I do not get the values specified in the tables (NDS 2005).

The values in table 11.3.2 are a little off-but I checked those and the formulas are simple-I just think the table doesn't use the exact value from the formula. And since Fem=Fes it shouln't make a huge difference. I have attached the excel file.

My values are coming in a fair bit higher and I don't know why.I was just hoping some of you had experience calculating these by hand and was wondering if you could help. The file is yours if you can fix it-my broken gift to you for the help.

RE: NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

Try using the reduced diameter, Dr, in your equations.  It looks like you used D.  The tabulated values are based on reduced diameter which in your case would be 0.131".

thanks dylansdad. I caught that and now it works beautifully.

RE: NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

Ron,

This spreadsheet is sweet. Seems to work perfect for bolts. Can it be set up for lag screws as well?

Here Ya go 4thorns.

Its now set up to do everything. Withdrawal, Lateral, Bolts, lags, nails ect. and it can do metal plates.

The C values chart works for dowels, havent set it up for the other crap-anything not set up is in red.

Enjoy,

And if you have any sweet spreadsheats of your own-feel free to send some my way!

RE: NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

Thanks Ron,

I'll have to check it out tomorrow. After looking at your formulas and layout I don't think I've got anything that you'd consider sweet! If I have time I'll send you one that I designed for built up beams. Maybe you could give me a few pointers! You're Excel expertise appears to be well above mine.

Doug

RE: NDS Connection Lateral Design Values

I am working on a wood ledger spreadsheet and didn't have access to a copy of the NDS - thanks Ron!
