Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

Hallo,

Just want to ask, can we perform UT on the incoloy material without calibrating it with incoloy 825 calibration block but using CS calibration block as a reference and then adjusting the wave velocity in the UT equipment itself as we know the wave velocity for incoloy 825.

Any reference code(s) which I can refer?

Cheers

RE: Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

You will need to qualify a procedure, not a great practice in my mind. What is the intent of the UT Examination.

RE: Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

Is this installed or new loose tubes?
You would come closer using a 316SS as a reference.

The real issue is that if you are looking for specific defects then you need to have a manufactured version of that in your ref piece for sizing.  Otherwise you are only guessing.

No.

This cooler has been in service for almost 6 years, we have a big problem with driling mud coming from a new pipeline which caused erosion issue on the upstream equipments and debris collected on the downstream equipments. The intention is to do 100% UT just to check the pverall condition of the header.

So we have to look for standard reference block made from incoloy 825?

RE: Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

Are you talking about standard thickness testing or more enhanced UT?

RE: Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

(OP)
It is just standard thickness testing, similar like UT wall thickness measurement (spot UT).

RE: Ultrasonic on Incoloy 825 (cooler header)

All you need are some pieces of 825 sheet about the same thickness as your system.  heck you could by corrosion test coupons if they are the right thickness.
